The Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) has issued a strong warning to the public, cautioning them against making payments into individual accounts that are not designated government accounts. The commission highlighted the urgency of this warning in light of recent reports of unscrupulous individuals impersonating LSSC officials and extorting unsuspecting members of the public.
In a press release made available to the media on Tuesday, the Director-General of the LSSC, Lanre Mojola, emphasized that the state government does not operate individual accounts. He stressed that any individual requesting payments into such accounts does not represent the commission.
Expressing his concern, Mojola lamented the activities of these deceitful individuals who exploit the commission’s name for personal gain. He reassured the public that the LSSC has implemented stringent measures to combat the actions of compromised consultants.
Mojola revealed that legal actions have been taken against impersonators, and the consultancy of any consultants found guilty has been terminated. He shared that a recent case resulted in the imprisonment of an impersonator for several years.
To ensure transparency and credibility, the LSSC has issued authorized identification cards to all its consultants. These cards must be worn at all times during audits or inspections.
The Director-General urged members of the public to promptly report any suspicious activities involving unscrupulous officials, consultants, or impersonators to the government. The LSSC has established hotlines for this purpose, accessible through 07000SAFETY and 08181002233.
Monika emphasized the wide-ranging responsibilities of the LSSC. These include the issuance and withdrawal of overall safety compliance certificates, conducting and reviewing risk assessment reports, investigating safety-related matters, and making recommendations when necessary. Additionally, the commission is responsible for coordinating all government affairs related to the safety of lives and properties in Lagos State.
The LSSC plays a vital role in formulating safety policies, providing advisory services, and acting as the regulatory body for safety-related issues. It actively coordinates and monitors the activities of relevant organizations involved in safety services across the state. When required, the commission appoints consultants to fulfill its functions within the framework of the law. Furthermore, it fosters and maintains effective interaction, networking, and collaboration with relevant government agencies on safety matters.
