Smooth Sailing for Eid Travelers: Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Construction Temporarily Halted

In an effort to alleviate potential traffic gridlock during the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir, Sallah celebration, the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing has decided to temporarily halt construction work on the ongoing reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Engr. (Mrs) Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, made the announcement in a statement released on Monday. The decision to suspend the construction activities was prompted by several factors, including the recent heavy traffic congestion along the Lagos Shagamu route, unfavorable weather conditions, and the advice of the dedicated traffic management team assigned to handle traffic-related issues on the project.

According to the statement, the suspension of construction work on this critical and heavily utilized highway will take effect from Tuesday, June 27 to Sunday, July 2, 2023. The aim is to ensure smooth travel for commuters during the Eid holiday period and minimize the inconvenience caused by traffic congestion during this significant period.

Travellers are urged to cooperate with the Traffic Management Team deployed on the highway to effectively manage traffic flow. By adhering to the instructions and guidance provided by the team, road users can contribute to a more seamless and hassle-free journey.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway reconstruction project is a major infrastructure endeavor aimed at improving connectivity and enhancing transportation efficiency between Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria, and Ibadan, a prominent city in southwestern Nigeria. The road serves as a vital artery for both intercity and interstate travel, supporting the movement of people, goods, and services across the region.

With the temporary suspension of construction activities, the government hopes to ensure that the anticipated increase in traffic volume during the Eid-el-Kabir festivities does not exacerbate the already congested road network. This proactive measure is expected to provide a reprieve for travelers and facilitate safer and more convenient journeys during this festive period.

As the Ministry of Works and Housing takes steps to minimize disruption and inconvenience, it remains committed to completing the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway reconstruction project in a timely manner. The suspension of work during this holiday period demonstrates the government’s dedication to balancing infrastructure development with the needs and well-being of the public, particularly during important occasions like Eid-el-Kabir.
