The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has addressed the recent controversy surrounding Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, and the allegations of ethnic profiling and voter intimidation. In a viral video captured a few days before the March 18 governorship elections, MC Oluomo was seen cautioning Igbo voters not to cast their votes for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Following widespread public outcry, MC Oluomo, who is also the Chairman of the Lagos State Parks Management Committee, released another video where he dismissed the allegations of threats to the Igbos. He claimed he was addressing a woman named “Iya Chukwudi” and not the Igbo in Lagos. When asked if he was calling for MC Oluomo’s arrest, the deputy governor stated that he was not a police officer or a prosecutor and that people should examine the evidence.
According to Hamzat, it is “very unfortunate” that voters were profiled on election day and prevented from voting due to their appearance. He emphasized that such actions were unacceptable, and anyone found guilty should be arrested and prosecuted.
Addressing the audio clips of APC executive council members in the state allegedly threatening voters who plan not to vote for the party, Hamzat admitted that some supporters were overzealous. He stated that he has friends who are Igbo APC members and that assuming someone will vote a certain way based on their ethnicity is ridiculous.
In conclusion, the deputy governor made it clear that the law should be upheld, and anyone who breaks it, regardless of their status, should be held accountable.
