The Kogi State Government, together with stakeholders in the financial sector, recently conducted a sensitization campaign in Lokoja to inform the public about the need to accept old naira notes in compliance with a Supreme Court ruling.
The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, addressed a large crowd of Okada riders and market women under the newly constructed Ganaja Flyover, congratulating Nigerians over the Supreme Court judgement. He explained that the people can use both the old and new naira notes together until December 31, 2023, and that the banks have agreed to accept old naira notes as deposits.
The State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd), emphasized the importance of Kogites cooperating with the State Government to ease the financial strains caused by the current cash policy. He assured the public that his office would work with security agencies to ensure compliance.
Mukadam Asiwaju Idris Asiru encouraged the people to take advantage of the banks’ cooperation and said that he had secured a commitment from the banks to load their ATMs with both old and new naira notes to ease the cash scarcity in the state.
Representatives of major banks in Lokoja assured the people that they are ready to accept old naira notes as deposits, and urged customers to accept them freely. The sensitization campaign reached all transport unions, fuel stations, and major markets in Lokoja, and the organizers promised to continue to sensitize the public through radio and other communication media.
