Kanye West’s bid to get on the Illinois ballot for President has just hit an unexpected bump.
According to TMZ, there are serious objections about the petition signatures that Kanye has submitted.
The report reveals that 3 objections have been filed with the Illinois Board of Elections; this means that it will now evaluate the validity of the signatures on his petition, and then hold a special meeting to decide whether or not Kanye’s name gets printed on the state’s ballots.
Officials who spoke to the news outlet disclosed that anyone can request to take a closer look at Kanye’s 412 petition papers which he submitted last week. Also, every single signature can be objected to for different reasons (including possible duplicates and/or use of fake names.
One of those objecting, Sean Tenner, told TMZ that after reviewing roughly 3,200 signatures, less than 1,000 were found to be valid in Kanye’s documents. He didn’t say specifically why.
Kanye needs 2,500 valid signatures to remain on the state’s presidential ballot, and Tenner says he was motivated to investigate the petition signatures after Kanye’s controversial comments about Harriet Tubman.
Kanye had reportedly said that the late American abolitionist and political activist had never freed slaves, something that attracted lots of backlash from many.
As for his current presidential race challenges, TMZ reveals that the board will hold a special meeting next week and assign an officer to review the evidence and decided Kanye’s fate on his home state’s ballot.
