Jumia To Stop Accepting Old Naira Notes From January 30

Jumia, the leading pan-African e-commerce platform, has announced that it will no longer be accepting the old naira notes as payment at the point of delivery starting January 30th, 2023.

The decision comes in response to the recent currency redesign policy implemented by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The notice, which was sent to customers via the Jumia mobile application, comes just three days ahead of the January 31st deadline set by the CBN for the validity of the old N200, N500, and N1000 notes currently in circulation.

In October 2022, the CBN announced a naira redesign policy that includes the issuance of new higher denomination notes to replace the current ones.

Despite calls for an extension by some critics, the CBN has maintained that the deadline will not be changed.

In light of this, Jumia has stated that only the new notes will be accepted for cash payments, and customers can also opt for other payment methods such as JumiaPay.

“From Monday 30th January 2023, Jumia delivery associates will not be able to accept the old notes of N200, N500, and N1,000 sequel to the directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN),” the statement reads.

“Should you wish to pay by cash, our delivery associates will only accept the new series of notes. Alternatively, you can find details here on how to prepay on Jumia using JumiaPay or call us on 01 888 1106 if there are any further questions.

“We will communicate further in case of any change from the federal government or central bank.”

This is a significant move by Jumia as it shows the company’s commitment to complying with the currency redesign policy and adapting to the changes implemented by the CBN.

It also serves as a reminder for customers to be aware of the deadline and to ensure that they have the new notes on hand for cash payments.
