Former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has opened up about the harrowing experience of his father’s kidnap and how he had to pay a ransom to secure his release. In 2018, just four hours before the Super Eagles game against Argentina in Russia, Mikel received the news that his father, Pa Michael Obi, and his driver, Ishaya John, had been kidnapped on the Markurdi – Enugu road.

Despite the distressing news, Mikel decided to lead the Super Eagles in what was widely praised as a remarkable display of patriotism. In an interview with Dubai Eye 103.8 Sport, Mikel recounted how he was able to put aside the thoughts of his father’s safety and prosecute the game.

Mikel explained that he received the shocking news while on the team bus to the stadium in St Petersburg. A family member called and informed him that he had to call the kidnappers on a designated number, which he did. The kidnappers demanded a ransom, and although he was emotionally distraught, Mikel knew he had to play the game.

“I was confused. I did not know what to do, but in the end, I knew that I could not let 180 million Nigerians down,” he said. “I had to shut it out of my head and go and represent my country first.”

Mikel further revealed that the kidnappers threatened to shoot his father instantly if he reported to the authorities or told anyone. He could not even inform the coaches or NFF staff, and only a very tight circle of his friends knew.

“They [the kidnappers] said listen, we know, it is Mikel he would pay. If he doesn’t, we are going to shoot his dad. They said they had nothing to lose. They would shoot my dad and dump him somewhere,” he said.

After the game, Mikel negotiated with the kidnappers and paid a ransom to secure his father’s release. However, even now, the experience still haunts him.

“It was horrible. Even when I got a flashback, I had to speak to the guys on the phone. There was a gunpoint at his head. They said they would shoot him, kill him,” Mikel said. “I have not told my kids about it, but a few months ago, they looked at my phone and saw the news about it. Obviously, I have not told them about it because they are young kids, but one day when they grow up, I will be able to share the story with them.”

Mikel’s bravery and commitment to the Super Eagles have earned him widespread admiration and respect, with many hailing him as a true hero. His story highlights the challenges and dangers faced by athletes and their families, and the courage required to overcome them.
