The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has denounced a purported second declaration of Biafra made in Finland, describing the act as a “shambolic scam” and a deliberate attempt to undermine the struggle for Biafran sovereignty. IPOB insists that the only valid declaration of Biafra remains the one made by the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in 1967.

Emma Powerful, IPOB’s spokesperson, made this known in a statement released on Sunday, clarifying the group’s mission and distancing its leadership, including Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, from the Finland event.

“The so-called declaration is a scam,” the statement read. “There is no room for another Biafra declaration besides the one our eternal leader, Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu, declared in 1967.”

Rejecting Finland’s Claims

IPOB criticized the Finland gathering as a failed attempt by “unscrupulous elements” to tarnish the legitimacy of the Biafran struggle. Emma Powerful accused these individuals of exploiting gullible supporters to create an international mockery of IPOB’s efforts.

“The idiocy exhibited by a group of nincompoops in Finland recently in the name of the Biafra declaration is trash,” the statement added. “Those involved in the event in Finland were among the sponsors of insecurity in the Southeast region.”

Biafra’s Legitimate Path to Sovereignty

Reiterating its commitment to restoring the sovereignty declared in 1967, IPOB emphasized its call for a United Nations-supervised referendum to determine Biafra’s political future. According to the group, the Finland-based declaration undermines the sacrifices of those who fought during the Nigerian Civil War, which began after Ojukwu’s declaration of Biafra.

“Biafra was declared by our eternal leader, late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, in 1967,” the statement affirmed. “IPOB stands to demand a UN-supervised referendum for Biafrans to decide their political future.”

The group also criticized those behind the Finland declaration, labeling them “autopilot criminals” and accusing them of destabilizing the Southeast region and dividing public support for Biafran independence.

Media Reaction and Public Response

IPOB commended mainstream media and bloggers for ignoring the Finland event, which it described as a “picnic” orchestrated by infiltrators and provocateurs. It called on supporters of Biafran sovereignty to remain focused on legitimate efforts to achieve their objectives.

“Biafrans, friends of Biafra, and lovers of Biafra freedom must understand that the shambolic declaration of Biafra independence in the faraway land of Finland is a scam,” the statement continued. “Those who funded infiltrators that gathered for a picnic in Finland have been scammed.”

IPOB’s Leadership Perspective

The group reiterated its faith in the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu, whom it described as a strategic freedom fighter dedicated to a peaceful and lawful approach toward self-determination. It accused detractors of attempting to pressure Kanu into making an unnecessary second declaration, which he wisely resisted.

IPOB concluded by reaffirming its stance on restoring Biafra’s sovereignty through lawful means, warning that any attempts to interfere with this mission would be met with consequences. “The blood of the fallen heroes of Biafra will chase and hunt down those who obstruct the Biafra restoration,” the statement warned.

The controversy surrounding the Finland declaration comes amidst IPOB’s continued calls for international recognition and support for a referendum to settle the question of Biafra’s independence.
