Following recent reports of hack on celebrities’ accounts Instagram has attested to the fact that there was a security breech on the social media platform. In a similar vein, the same breech had led to Selena Gomez account that posted nake-d photo of her ex, Justin Bieber.
The company said a bug in its software allowed hackers to access contact details – phone numbers and email addresses – of verified, high-profile users.
Instagram said no passwords were exposed, and that it “fixed the bug swiftly and are running a thorough investigation”.
“We recently discovered that one or more individuals obtained unlawful access to a number of users’ contact information by exploiting a bug in an Instagram API,” it said.
“We encourage people to be vigilant about the security of their account and exercise caution if they encounter any suspicious activity, such as unrecognised incoming calls, texts, and emails.”
