Category 3 hurricane makes landfall with 120mph winds, leaving Florida’s west coast in chaos

Hurricane Milton has wreaked havoc in Florida, claiming multiple lives after making landfall with wind speeds of up to 120mph and storm surges reaching 12 feet. The massive Category 3 storm hit Siesta Key around 1:30am GMT, bringing devastation to coastal areas and leaving nearly three million homes and businesses without power.

The storm, which had been building strength in the Gulf of Mexico, deluged cities like Sarasota, St Petersburg, and Tampa Bay with relentless rainfall. Authorities had warned residents to evacuate, stating that anyone remaining in the hurricane’s path “will die.” Dubbed the “storm of the century,” Hurricane Milton caused widespread destruction along Florida’s west coast, particularly in Tampa Bay, which bore the brunt of the storm.

In addition to the fatalities and property damage, the storm has also disrupted travel plans for many international tourists. Virgin Atlantic canceled 23 return flights between the UK and Florida, leaving British travelers stranded. The airline informed passengers that services to and from Orlando and Tampa were affected due to the state of emergency declared in Florida, causing widespread delays and cancellations.

The full extent of the damage caused by Hurricane Milton is still being assessed, but recovery efforts are expected to be lengthy as authorities work to restore power and provide aid to affected residents.
