The President-elect of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has stated that media reports of his response to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State are misleading. Tinubu reportedly made comments during the commissioning of the Rumuokwuta-Rumuola flyover bridge, where he advised Wike to lobby him for refunds on monies expended by the state on federal projects. Tinubu said that Wike was in order and that any interpretation of his comments was false.
Tinubu clarified his response, saying that he was grateful to Wike, who did not ask for personal commitment but rather a policy commitment. He also explained that he could not commit to expenditure on behalf of the outgoing President, as there can only be one President at a time. He urged Nigerians to get educated and be informed.
Governor Wike had earlier drawn the attention of the federal government to the need to amend its procurement law to end the incessant abandonment of projects across the country. He stressed that some of the flyovers were built on federal roads, and the state should be refunded by the FG. He requested the incoming administration to consider a possible refund to Rivers State.
In addition, Governor Wike pledged N20 million monthly stipend to the Nebo Graham Douglas Law School, a Federal Government facility built by the state government. He stated that the state government gave out N400 million for the maintenance of the structures when they handed over the Law School to the Council of Legal Education. The governor charged the state chief judge not to allow the newly constructed court complex to suffer a similar fate, and he assured that financial provision would be made to cater to the maintenance needs of the complex for the first year.
