The governor made this call during a visit to Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, in Abuja. He emphasized the importance of a strong partnership between the Kano government and TETFund to enhance the quality of education in the state.

Governor Yusuf stated, “The purpose of my visit is to ensure continued collaboration between the Kano government and TETFund in terms of projects and other educational assistance to these two universities. Of course, my predecessor established the third university in the state, but as far as we are concerned, these two universities are close to our heart.”

The governor commended TETFund for its commendable efforts in executing infrastructure projects in tertiary institutions nationwide. He specifically requested TETFund’s support in providing additional facilities, conducting staff training and retraining programs, and addressing flood control at Kano University of Science and Technology in Wudil.

He explained, “Infrastructure development is my primary concern because, without classrooms, hostels, libraries, and other facilities, the entire system will collapse. The provision of infrastructure is crucial for universities and other tertiary education institutions. If you look at most universities in the country, they owe their current educational facilities to the support of TETFund.”

Governor Yusuf also highlighted the importance of training and retraining university staff, acknowledging TETFund’s contributions in this area. He emphasized the need for continuous skill development to enhance the quality of education and research conducted in universities.

Meanwhile, Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, congratulated Governor Yusuf on his victory in the March 2023 gubernatorial election. Echono expressed the fund’s readiness to collaborate with the government to improve the state’s tertiary education institutions.

He acknowledged Kano’s significance as a hub for commerce and education, boasting over a dozen universities in the state.

Echono explained, “TETFund intervenes in three types of institutions within a state: universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. To ensure effective resource allocation and meaningful impact, the Board of Trustees has placed limitations on the number of institutions we support.

“We do not encourage states to establish multiple institutions solely to target TETFund intervention. Instead, we focus on enlisting two similar types of institutions at a time, alternating between universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education to ensure equality among states.”

The collaborative efforts between the Kano government and TETFund are expected to result in improved infrastructure, enhanced training programs, and the overall advancement of tertiary education in Kano State.
