During the two-day ministerial training for board members and management staff held in Abuja, the Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone, Prof. Muhammad Abubakar, revealed that the Federal Government blocked over 200 cyberattacks during the presidential and National Assembly elections held on February 25. The training, tagged ‘Positioning the GBB Team for Effective Management and Leadership in the 4th Industrial Revolution,’ aimed at reviewing the agency’s performance while initiating alternative means of revenue generation.
Abubakar disclosed that on the election day alone, they blocked over 200 cyberattacks, while the next day, the number of attacks rose to 1.2 million, all of which were successfully blocked by the agency. He emphasized that a business continuity and cyberspace protection committee had been established to guard and regulate digital activities while optimizing the GBB’s technical services.
The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, facilitated the training and stated that it aimed to evaluate and recalibrate Galaxy Backbone Limited in terms of management and leadership for optimal outputs. Pantami praised GBB’s approach to digital infrastructural development while saving the cost of governance.
Pantami urged GBB to be proactive and explore new areas for revenue generation, stating that training is key to improving performance and self-assessment. He applauded the committee for cyberspace and Information and Communication Technology infrastructure protection that was inaugurated on February 23 by the ministry ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Cyberattacks have become a significant threat to the integrity of electoral processes worldwide, and Nigeria is no exception. The successful blockage of these attacks is a significant achievement for Galaxy Backbone, and it showcases the importance of cybersecurity in the digital age.
