Okechukwu Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, recently shared his inspiring story of how he overcame the challenges and obstacles in the Nigerian entertainment industry to become the successful comedian and actor he is today. Bakassi was speaking to a group of young people who had gathered for the pre-launch of the Stars and Legends reality TV show in Lagos.
As Bakassi approaches his 30th anniversary in the entertainment industry later this year, he reflected on his humble beginnings in Lagos in the 1990s. At the time, he had just arrived from Port Harcourt to begin his NYSC orientation with only N750 in his pocket. Despite the difficulties he faced, Bakassi remained determined to change his life through entertainment.
After completing his NYSC program, Bakassi began working at the Nigeria Industry Development Bank. However, he was conflicted about his career path as he had studied engineering but was passionate about entertainment. He had already started featuring in a TV series, Fortunes, alongside actors like Ramsey Nouah, Regina Asika, and Liz Benson, but was not being paid.
Feeling torn between pursuing a career in engineering or entertainment, Bakassi sought the advice of a friend who was the Managing Director of a finance institution. His friend encouraged him to follow his heart and pursue his happiness through entertainment, even if it meant going without an income for some time.
Taking this advice to heart, Bakassi began his journey in entertainment by placing himself on a salary scale similar to his friends in lucrative jobs, even though he had no idea where the money would come from. He delved into different aspects of the industry, including being a props manager and location manager, and even went as far as trekking the streets of FESTAC in search of houses where movies could be shot.
Despite the competition and limited opportunities in the industry, Bakassi persevered and eventually made a name for himself as a successful comedian and actor. His story is a testament to the power of determination, hard work, and following one’s passion.
