In a CNN town hall held in New Hampshire, former US president Donald Trump made bold claims about his ability to swiftly end the war in Ukraine if he were to be re-elected as president. Expressing his desire to bring an end to the loss of life in the conflict, Trump rejected the traditional Republican stance of supporting Kyiv and proposed an alternative approach.
Trump emphasized his focus on finding a resolution rather than simply achieving victory. He stated, “I don’t think in terms of winning and losing. I think in terms of getting it settled.” Urging an end to the casualties suffered by both Russians and Ukrainians, he confidently asserted, “I’ll have that done in 24 hours. You need the power of the presidency to do it.”
During the town hall, Trump further elaborated on his strategy, emphasizing his willingness to negotiate directly with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump believed that by leveraging the strengths and weaknesses of both leaders, he could bring about a swift resolution to the conflict. “I’ll meet with Putin. I’ll meet with Zelensky. Within 24 hours, that war will be settled. It’ll be over,” he proclaimed.
When questioned about his views on Putin’s alleged war crimes in Ukraine, Trump refused to label him as a war criminal. He argued that such a designation would hinder potential negotiations, stating, “If you say he’s a war criminal, it’s going to be a lot tougher to make a deal to make this thing stopped.” Trump suggested that branding Putin as a war criminal would only intensify his resistance and deter efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully.
Trump did, however, acknowledge that he believed Putin had made a mistake by invading Ukraine. “His mistake was going in. He would have never gone in if I was president,” he claimed. By highlighting what he perceived as a misstep, Trump aimed to emphasize his own leadership and decision-making prowess.
Despite facing criminal indictments and ongoing investigations into serious allegations, the 76-year-old former president has already announced his intention to run for the presidency once again in 2024. Despite these legal challenges, Trump remains a leading contender for the Republican Party’s nomination.
