In a recent announcement, the Bauchi State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) revealed that five Corps members from the 2022 Batch B Stream 1, who had served in the state, will be required to repeat their entire service year due to various offenses that violated the rules, regulations, and codes of conduct of the scheme.
The disclosure took place during a ceremony held to distribute certificates of National Service to mark the completion of their service year. The Coordinator, Mrs. Yakubu, emphasized that the affected Corps members had been sanctioned for offenses such as abscondment and absenteeism from their Places of Primary Assignment (PPA) throughout their service year.
Mrs. Yakubu reiterated the NYSC’s zero-tolerance policy towards truancy and any form of misconduct, emphasizing that erring Corps members would face appropriate punishments. Additionally, she announced that ten other Corps members would have their service year extended by at least three weeks or one month due to various misconducts committed during their service period.
During the ceremony, Mrs. Yakubu urged the graduating Corps members to proceed directly to their respective homes and reunite with their parents and relatives. She strongly advised against traveling at night, prioritizing their safety and well-being.
Addressing the Corps members engaged in the post-camp Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) training, the NYSC Coordinator encouraged those who had not yet completed the training to continue and finish it. For those who had not acquired any skills during their service year, she urged them to embark on a journey of skill acquisition.
Mrs. Yakubu emphasized the importance of engaging in productive activities after service, highlighting the monthly stipend that had been a consistent source of income during their service year. She warned that without involvement in meaningful ventures after service, demoralization and frustration could ensue.
“Do not burden your parents,” she stated firmly. “One of the most disheartening things for a parent is to witness their graduate child staying at home, asking for food, transport money to visit friends, or funds for recharge cards. Your parents want to see you wake up in the morning, engaged in something meaningful and profitable. Even a small income is better than idleness at home.”
The ceremony concluded with the issuance of certificates of National Service to a total of 747 Corps members in Bauchi State, signifying their completion of the NYSC program and preparing them for the next phase of their lives.
