The federal government has updated the general public regarding its decision to suspend schools reopening and stopping them from participating in the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to The Nation, the Minister of State for Education Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba stated that the government’s position remains unchanged.

He added that the ministry was still in the process of consulting with education stakeholders on the best course to take.

Nwajiuba mentioned that WASSCE had also started consulting with West African countries on the possibility of shifting dates for the examination.

He said that the ministry would communicate any update if it changes its earlier position.

Education Minister Adamu Adamu had earlier said that the government would not risk the lives of students because of the terminal exams.

The state minister explained that there was no guarantee that Nigeria was safe yet as the numbers provided by the NCDC still indicate the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
