The federal government plans to relocate about 10,000 residents of Mosun Community in Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi due to the severe flooding caused by the River Benue during the rainy season.
The Managing Director of the Hydro-Electricity Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Yelwa, announced the plan during a visit to the affected areas.
He stated that the relocation is necessary due to the negative impact of the 2022 flood on the community and the prediction of heavier rainfall in 2023. Yelwa also mentioned that the commission is prepared to commence construction of new buildings for the affected villagers within two weeks once they are shown a suitable piece of land by the traditional ruler and the Bassa Local Government authorities.
The traditional ruler of the Mosun Kingdom, Alhaji Burka Ali, confirmed that the flood had displaced over 10,000 residents and washed away over 300m of land. He also stated that a piece of land has been selected for the resettlement of the affected residents and will be shown to HYPPADEC.
