South African musician, Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, who is widely known as DJ Maphorisa, has been taken into police custody on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo. As per reports, Phongolo suffered visible injuries during the altercation. The incident, which is being treated as an instance of gender-based violence, occurred at Phongolo’s residence in the Sandton neighborhood of Johannesburg.
According to City Press, the renowned Amapiano producer was reported to the authorities by Phongolo shortly after the incident. “He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” Phongolo said in a statement to the police.
On May 7th, 2023, the suspect was apprehended by the South African Police Service’s Sandton division after Phongolo lodged a case of common assault. “It is alleged that the suspect assaulted the victim at the apartment in Sandton on Sunday,” explained Mavela Masondo, a spokesperson for the police.
