Delta Governor Urges Calm Amidst Scarcity of New Naira Notes in Nigeria

The Governor of Delta State and Vice-Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, has called for calm among Nigerians amidst the current scarcity of new naira notes in the country.

Okowa’s appeal follows reports of protests by some citizens of the state in the Orhuwhorun Community of Udu Local Government Area, where a bank’s ATM gallery was allegedly set ablaze.

In a statement issued in Asaba by the State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, the governor appealed to citizens to remain calm while calling on the Central Bank of Nigeria and monetary authorities to take further action to increase the money supply in the system.

The governor acknowledged the citizens’ suffering caused by the scarcity of naira notes in the country, but urged them to exercise patience with the monetary authorities as they take steps to improve the money supply. He also advised against violence and destruction, noting that burning down a bank would not solve the problem but further compound the situation.

“We are very much aware of your pains and concerns,” Okowa said. “Once again, we appeal to you all to sheath your swords while we continue to engage the CBN to ensure more funds are released to the banks in the country.”
