In a recent development, the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has leveled serious accusations against former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, alleging his involvement in suspending the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to hinder the presidential aspirations of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
In a letter titled “Attempts by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to scuttle presidential ambition of President Bola Tinubu through recruitment of Mr. Godwin Emefiele, anti-Tinubu campaign stance and anti-party activities,” addressed to the President and made available to The PUNCH, prominent members of the Delta APC voiced their concerns.
The letter, signed by the state APC Secretary, Inana Michael; Delta North Chairman, Tom Onah; South Chairman, Nelson Ogharama; and Central Chairman, Michael Orunefe, detailed their allegations against Omo-Agege.
According to the letter, the party members had received information that Omo-Agege intended to grant party membership to Godwin Emefiele, the CBN Governor, despite objections raised by some members. They argued that it was morally improper for Emefiele to contest and warned Omo-Agege that his actions would negatively impact President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing the party’s presidential ticket.
Efforts to persuade Omo-Agege to reconsider his plans allegedly failed, as he assured Emefiele that Felix Morka, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, whom he had planted as a spy, would assist in securing the ticket for Emefiele.
The party leaders referred to an article published on May 9, 2022, in The PUNCH, which confirmed that Emefiele had received a membership card from the APC Ward chairman in February 2021. The ward chairman, Mr. Nduka Erikpume, and the Ika South APC Local Government Chairman, Hilary FadaIbude, were purportedly coerced by Omo-Agege into signing expulsion letters against state leaders who opposed Emefiele’s recruitment.
Furthermore, the Delta APC leaders alleged that on the night of the APC convention, Omo-Agege instructed Delta delegates to vote against Tinubu, favoring their “anointed” candidate. However, despite Omo-Agege’s stance, Tinubu emerged as the clear winner of the primary.
Adding to the accusations, the Delta APC leaders claimed that Omo-Agege supported the opposition Labour Party instead of the APC during the general elections. They provided posters and videos as evidence, showing Omo-Agege alongside the Labour Party candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, implying that he and his group had not worked in support of the President.
When approached for comment, the Communications and Media Strategist for Omo-Agege Campaign Organisation, Ima Niboro, directed the correspondent to contact the politician’s Chief Press Secretary, Sunny Areh. However, Areh declined to comment, suggesting that the Chairman of Delta APC, Omeni Sobotie, would be better suited to discuss the matter.
Efforts to reach Chairman Omeni Sobotie were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, as his phone line remained unreachable.
In response to the allegations, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissed them as baseless, stating, “I am sure you that’s not the real Delta APC. Those guys are Cairo Ojougboh-sponsored organization.”
The allegations made by the Delta APC leaders have sparked intense debates within the party,
