Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has criticized Portugal’s national team manager Roberto Martinez, suggesting that he should be sacked if he continues to start Cristiano Ronaldo in upcoming matches, particularly ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Burley argued that Ronaldo, despite his legendary status and five Ballon d’Or titles, is no longer capable of leading the Portuguese attack effectively. The Scottish football pundit claimed that the 38-year-old forward has struggled in recent major tournaments, including the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Euros.

Speaking on ESPN FC, Burley said, “He struggled at Manchester United at the end, he struggled at the 2022 World Cup, he struggled at the 2024 European Championships. Do you think he is going to do great in 2026? There is a path there — carried the country for a while and then started struggling.”

Burley labeled Ronaldo a “passenger” in recent competitions and expressed frustration with those who still believe the veteran forward should be a focal point of the team. “He was a passenger in 2022, was a passenger in 2024 and will be a passenger in 2026. If people can’t see that, including the Portuguese manager, he should not be in a job,” he added.

Ronaldo, who currently plays for Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr, remains a key figure for Portugal, but there is growing debate over whether the aging star should maintain his starting role as the team looks toward the future.
