China is now home to over 4,500 AI companies, showcasing the nation’s strong commitment to the AI sector, as revealed at a recent industry event.
Shan Zhongde, vice minister of industry and information technology, announced this data at the World Intelligence Expo 2024 in Tianjin.
Shan also highlighted China’s achievements in intelligent manufacturing, with 421 national-level demonstration factories and over 10,000 provincial-level digital workshops and smart factories now operational.
AI innovations, including humanoid robots and self-driving vehicles, are increasingly influencing daily life, according to officials and experts at the expo.
A bio-robot was one of the notable displays at the event, held in Tianjin on June 20, 2024.
Technologies like brain-computer interfaces and humanoid robots are expected to significantly impact sectors such as manufacturing, transportation, education, and healthcare, stated Wu Zhaohui, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
“AI technology can also inject transformative power into regional economic growth and reshape the landscape of global competition,” Wu remarked.
Official figures indicate that China’s core AI industry grew to over 578 billion yuan (approximately $80 billion) in 2023, a 13.9 percent increase from the previous year.
The government’s work report this year introduced the AI Plus initiative, aimed at advancing the digital economy and modernizing the manufacturing sector.
The World Intelligence Expo 2024, held from June 20 to 23, was co-organized by Tianjin and Chongqing Municipalities. This event combines the former World Intelligence Congress in Tianjin and the Smart China Expo in Chongqing.
Spanning 100,000 square meters, the expo included themed exhibitions on AI, intelligent vehicles, smart manufacturing, and robotics.
In the future, Tianjin and Chongqing will take turns hosting the World Intelligence Expo.
