Buhari Is Recuperating Fast, He Should Be Back Soon - Osinbajo

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has disclosed yesterday that ailing President Muhammadu Buhari was recuperating fast and should return to the country anytime soon.

Osinbajo had on Tuesday left Nigeria for the United Kingdom where he met with Buhari who had on May 7 left the country for London on an indefinite medical vacation.

Speaking to State House correspondents shortly before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council meeting, the acting president stated that he had an extensive discussion with the president on a wide range of issues for about an hour.

He, however, did not disclose the specific issues they discussed.

He said, ‘Well, first as you know I went to see him, I went to check up on him to find out how he was doing. I had, of course, been speaking with him on the phone and I thought it will be a good thing to go and see him and generally check up on how he was doing and also to brief him on developments back at home.’

“So, we had a very good time. We had a very good conversation on wide-ranging issues and he is in very good spirit, he is recuperating very quickly and he is doing very well”.

Asked to be specific on the state of health of President Buhari, Osinbajo replied: “Well, as I have said, he is in very high spirit; he is recuperating very well and we had a very long conversation, we spoke for well over an hour and his humour is all there. He is doing well and he is recuperating fast”.
On when Buhari should be expected back in the country, the Acting President noted that it would not be proper to set a deadline, adding that the president would return earlier than expected.

He said, “I think very very shortly. Very shortly. I think we should really expect him back very shortly. Like I said he is recuperating very fast and he is doing very very well.
“Deadlines aren’t a very good thing but as I said he is recuperating fast; we are expecting him very shortly, much sooner than you will expect”.

On whether the report of the suspended SGF and NIA DG, as well as the swearing-in of the two ministerial nominees earlier approved by the Senate, were part of his conversation with Buhari, Osinbajo said they were not.

“No. We didn’t discuss swearing in or anything like that. We didn’t discuss when they will be sworn in”.

Asked when will they be sworn in, he replied: “Well, I’m not in a position to say exactly. I don’t have a date in mind but I’m sure very very soon we will do that.
