Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama has spoken on the border closure in the country, stating that it was targeted at criminals and not countries.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja after meeting with Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Shirley Botchwey, Onyeama said the decision by the Federal Government was to curb criminal activities and that the move was within ECOWAS rules.

President Muhammadu Buhari has also explained that the border closure was meant to tackle massive smuggling activities, especially that of rice. Onyeama, who stressed the President’s words, reiterated that the country’s border being closed was not to put other African countries at a disadvantage.
