He hailed him as a hero who not only survived a harrowing experience ejecting from a fighter jet into a swamp but also fought against racism throughout his distinguished career.

The nomination of General Brown, affectionately known as “CQ” Brown, marks a significant milestone as he would become only the second Black man ever to assume this influential role. If confirmed by the Senate, General Brown’s appointment alongside Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin would mark the first time in history that African Americans simultaneously hold both of the military’s highest-ranking positions.

During the nomination ceremony held in the White House Rose Garden, President Biden commended General Brown’s impressive military background and his status as a member of a proud military family. With over 3,000 logged flight hours, including 130 in combat, General Brown possesses the invaluable firsthand experience and knows how to remain composed in the face of adversity, as highlighted by President Biden.

Amid laughter from the audience, President Biden recounted the incident where General Brown’s F-16 jet caught fire, leading to his ejection into a Florida swamp.

Reflecting on the episode, President Biden humorously remarked, “A lot of fun, huh?” The president emphasized that General Brown’s nomination is a testament to his exceptional leadership skills, earned respect from allies and partners, and unrivaled understanding of US military operations worldwide.

President Biden underscored General Brown’s unwavering commitment to achieving victory, stating, “He plays to win,” and expressed confidence in the general’s ability to serve as an invaluable asset to the commander-in-chief and the United States of America in navigating the challenges that lie ahead.

As chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Brown would assume the critical responsibility of maintaining a robust combat force capable of deterring and defeating potential threats.

President Biden acknowledged the need to effectively manage the competition with China and address the renewed aggression from Russia in Europe.

Additionally, the president recognized the evolving landscape of warfare, mentioning the potential impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and 3D printing, which could fundamentally transform the character of future conflicts.

President Biden’s decision to nominate General Brown aligns with his administration’s commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity in top government positions.

Emphasizing the significance of this nomination, President Biden stated that it is a celebration of “the most American of ideas, the most evident truth — that all women and men are created equal.” The president commended General Brown’s courageous stance against racism and his deep love for the country, praising him for speaking out and showcasing real backbone.

If confirmed by the Senate, General Charles Brown will succeed Army General Mark Milley, concluding his four-year term that encompassed the tumultuous period of the Donald Trump presidency.

General Brown’s appointment would not only bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the role but also mark a historic milestone in the pursuit of greater diversity and equality within the US military’s highest echelons.
