Barcelona’s Director of Football, Mateu Alemany, will be leaving the club in the summer to embark on a new venture elsewhere. In a statement released on Tuesday, the club confirmed that Alemany would be departing at the beginning of July, but he will continue to work for Barcelona to complete any summer transfer deals that take longer to finalize. This is possible because his contract runs until the summer of 2024.

According to Barcelona, “Despite the fact that he will leave the club on July 1, thanks to a friendly agreement, Mateu Alemany has promised to seal all first-team transfer deals this summer, even if there are some that take place at the last minute of the transfer window.”

Alemany has been linked with a move to Premier League side Aston Villa in recent media reports. The Spaniard has garnered praise for his work on securing several players’ signings while the club has faced financial difficulties, especially those arrivals on free transfers, such as defender Andreas Christensen. Furthermore, he has aided the club in moving on players with high wages, including Philippe Coutinho and Miralem Pjanic.

President Joan Laporta appointed the 60-year-old Alemany after he took office in March 2021. Despite his imminent departure, Alemany has pledged to ensure that Barcelona completes all their summer transfer deals effectively. The club is grateful for his commitment and dedication to his role and wishes him well in his future endeavors.
