iOS 18 brings exciting new features, but older iPhones may miss out on Apple Intelligence
With Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” event just days away, the tech giant is set to unveil the highly anticipated iPhone 16 lineup alongside the official release of iOS 18. If you’re wondering whether your current iPhone will support the upcoming software and the much-talked-about Apple Intelligence, here’s what you need to know.
iPhones Compatible with iOS 18
If your iPhone was eligible for last year’s iOS 17 update, you’re in luck — it will still be supported with iOS 18. That means the following iPhones will receive the update:
- iPhone SE (second generation or later)
- iPhone XR, XS, XS Max
- iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
However, iPhone 8 and iPhone X models, which were left out of iOS 17 last year, will not be eligible for the update. These older devices will continue to function but won’t receive iOS 18’s new features.
Apple Intelligence: Will Your iPhone Support It?
Apple Intelligence, the standout feature of iOS 18, won’t be available on all devices. As of now, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models support this advanced AI system. Rumor has it that the iPhone 16 lineup will be fully compatible with Apple Intelligence, but we’ll have to wait for the September 9 event to confirm. If you have an older iPhone, you’ll still get most of iOS 18’s new features, just without Apple Intelligence.
iOS 18: What’s New?
While Apple Intelligence is the headline feature, iOS 18 packs plenty of updates for all eligible devices. Here are some highlights:
- Passwords App: A dedicated app to securely store and manage your passwords, moving the functionality out of Settings for easier access.
- Messages App Improvements: You can now bold, italicize, underline, and strikethrough text in iMessages. Plus, animations and RCS support will make messaging across iPhones and Android devices smoother.
- Redesigned Photos App: Create and pin your own photo collections, and enjoy a cleaner, more customizable layout in the Photos app.
- Personalized Home Screen Layout: Arrange your apps in a new way — for instance, leave the center of the screen clear for a photo, and tint or resize app icons along the border.
These features are just a glimpse of what iOS 18 will offer, with additional improvements across apps like Maps, Calendar, and Safari.
When Will iOS 18 Be Released?
iOS 18 is expected to be available to the public within two weeks of the September 9 iPhone 16 event. If you’re eager to explore the new software sooner, you can download the iOS 18 beta now — but be prepared for potential bugs and glitches.
With the iPhone 16 models just around the corner, and iOS 18 packed with innovative features, this year’s Apple event is set to be one of the most exciting yet. Stay tuned for more updates and details on how to get the most out of Apple’s latest offerings.
