Dear Professor Arigbabu,
Like so many other TASUEDITES, I find myself both hopeful and inspired by your emergence as the acting Vice-chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education. This shows your effort in TASUED is noticed beyond this institution. Sir, your appointment presents a historic opportunity to chart a new course for this University. I am particularly heartened by your promise to listen to and understand the hopes and aspirations of staffs and students of this institution. Hence, my writing to draw your attention to issues of urgent importance.
Professor, you would agree with me that one of the cardinal methods of actualizing the TASUED dream is by revitalizing the public-private participation of the school. The effort of the first vice-chancellor, Professor Kayode Oyesiku in that aspect has been a tremendous blessing to all students that passed through TASUED, buildings like Petro-chemical complex, KAAF, Akingbola Hostel were what we gained. There are many prominent Ijebu sons and daughters that can be approached on this; Gbola Oba, King Sikiru Adetona, Chief Subomi Balogun, Wasiu Ayinde are few of this large group that can listen to our cry in this austere times.
Dear Professor, another issue that needs attention is the information dissemination system of the institution, just as the motion ground is an eyesore for well-wishers, TASUED website is the same for online visitors. As at the time of writing this letter, the school website lacks the information of a modern webpage. This shows the ICT is either overstretched or redundant.The ripple effect is the queuing of students under the sun – a disgrace in contemporary schools. Moreso, the need for a radio station (either shortwave or longwave) is needed to improve the information network of this institution. While I understand the cost might be too much, the proximity of SMA 104.7fm can be used to the advantage of the school. This could lead to a strategic partnership between the school and the budding FM station.
Furthermore, if TASUED intends to bring the best out of her students, the need to reward great minds becomes paramount. If this is not looked into, the sad impression of “who book help” will continue to bedevil our educational strides. Events like “Human Library”, “Entrepreneural challenge”, “Open debate” and so on are programs capable of transforming our institution.
Sir, let me also use this opportunity to recommend the integration of our Alumni network in the school system. Our fledgling alumni include; Olawale Ayilara (CEO of the biggest investment company in Nigeria), Wole Oduwole (TALKGLITZ media), Olamide Adedeji (YBNL), academians, artisans and so on. An active alumnus is very important when it comes to putting the institution first, they have the courage and university at heart.
Please remember this will put you in good stead.
Lastly, let me bring your attention to the welfare of your staffs. Your good intention becomes a farce if your executors (academic and non-academic) are not compensated adequately and regularly. These important groups make or mar your tenure, however, it also goes without saying that they should also be punished if they go against the university code of conduct and terms of contract. I suggest you make use of committees so as not to look autocratic.
I am hoping that you will take the advice I have outlined in this long epistle so that together we can move TASUED forward. Who says you cannot outperform your predecessors and successors?
