Lagos Court Approves Extension of Seun Kuti’s Remand in Assault Case

Seun Kuti, a popular afrobeat singer, has been granted a four-day extension of remand by the Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Adeola Olatubosun, approved the extension, effectively keeping Kuti in custody until May 22.

The application for the extension was presented by Mr Simon Lough (SAN), who led a legal team representing the police. Lough stated that the purpose of the extension was to allow for further investigation into the case.

The incident in question allegedly occurred on May 13 on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State. Seun Kuti is accused of slapping an inspector after driving recklessly on the bridge and intentionally obstructing a moving police vehicle.

Kuti was initially arraigned on Tuesday, during which the chief magistrate ordered his remand for 48 hours. However, she also ruled that the defendant could be granted bail in the amount of one million Naira, provided he could secure two sureties of the same sum. One of the sureties must be a landlord within the jurisdiction of the court.

The case has been adjourned until May 22 for mention. The chief magistrate directed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and submit a copy to the state director of public prosecutions for further advice.

Seun Kuti, known for his activism and energetic performances, has gained a significant following both in Nigeria and internationally. The news of his remand and the ongoing investigation has sparked considerable attention and speculation among his fans and the general public.

As the situation unfolds, updates will be provided regarding any new developments in the case.
