According to reports, Sen Ademola Adeleke, the Governor of Osun State, has stated that his predecessor, Adegboyega Oyetola, has the right to contest the appellate court ruling by approaching the Supreme Court if he so wishes. Adeleke made this statement during an interview on the Arise News morning show on Monday.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Friday upheld Adeleke’s election as the governor of the state, affirming the earlier decision of the election petition tribunal which nullified the governor’s victory in January. The three-member panel of the appellate court led by Mohammed Shuaibu unanimously reached this decision.
Oyetola, on the other hand, expressed his intention to seek further redress at the apex court, citing solid grounds for his decision in a statement issued by his media aide, Ismail Omipidan.
Reacting to Oyetola’s move, Adeleke said that he is not anxious and that it is within his predecessor’s rights to approach the Supreme Court. He expressed confidence in the support of his people and the backing of God, and called on Oyetola to put the election dispute behind them and work together to move the state forward.
Adeleke also revealed that he had tried to reach out to Oyetola immediately after the Appeal Court ruling to extend an olive branch and discuss ways to move the state forward. Although he had not received a congratulatory call from Oyetola, he remained hopeful that they could put their differences aside and work towards a better future for Osun state.
