In the wake of intensifying security concerns across Nigeria, accomplished Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has appealed to the Federal Government to discontinue the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program.
This call comes following reports of a distressing incident where eight NYSC members were recently abducted while traveling along a highway in Zamfara State.
Taking to her Twitter account on Wednesday, the veteran actress expressed deep concern over the safety of Corps members in light of the rampant insecurity plaguing various parts of the country. Henshaw passionately advocated for the dismantling of the NYSC scheme, citing the compromised security of the participants.
In her candid statement, the esteemed actress conveyed her strong message to the government, emphasizing the urgent need to prioritize the safety and well-being of the nation’s youth. She stated, “When I served in the North, it was a very memorable experience. Traveling from Bauchi by road to the airport was safe & then flying to Lagos just with my NYSC ID card, which also got me a rebate on my ticket.”
With a sense of urgency, Henshaw called upon the authorities to acknowledge the changing landscape of security within the country. She firmly stressed, “It’s time to scrap this idea since corpers can’t travel within this country without let or hindrance! Stop putting the lives of young people at risk with moribund ideas. Security is a priority & needs to be sorted totally, not technically.”

The actress’s heartfelt plea comes at a critical juncture when the Nigerian society is grappling with escalating security challenges. The incident involving the kidnapping of NYSC members in Zamfara State highlights the pressing need for a comprehensive reevaluation of the NYSC program’s feasibility in the current security climate.
As Kate Henshaw’s influential voice joins the chorus of concerns surrounding the NYSC scheme, it remains to be seen how the Federal Government will respond to this call for action. The nation’s collective attention now turns to the policymakers, urging them to address the pressing security concerns that continue to affect the lives of the country’s youth.
