A statement released on Friday by the Coalition of Igbo Unions of Nigeria (CIUN), an Igbo group, has expressed concern over recent developments in Abia State, where Governor Alex Otti issued an ultimatum to Northern businesses in the Cattle market in Umunneochi LGA. The group cautioned against forcefully ejecting Northern traders from the state, emphasizing the potential negative repercussions on Igbo traders in Northern regions and across Nigeria.
The statement, jointly signed by the group’s Chairman, Obinna John Okoroafor, Secretary Udoka Onwuka, and Public Relations Officer Maduabuchi Ibe Madu, condemned the indiscriminate demolition of shops and residential homes. The CIUN called for alternative solutions to be promptly provided for Northern traders.
The CIUN acknowledged the importance of safeguarding the lives and property of all Nigerians but criticized what they perceived as ethnic profiling by Governor Alex Otti. They argued that Otti’s approach could exacerbate tensions and lead to violence and clashes in various parts of Nigeria against Igbo communities. The group urged Governor Otti to reconsider his actions and apologize to Northern traders.
In addition, the CIUN called upon security agencies to intensify their efforts in combating criminal activities, such as kidnapping, in Umunneochi, Abia State, and throughout Nigeria. They reiterated their commitment to a peaceful and just environment for all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or tribe. The group gave Governor Alex Otti a 48-hour deadline to retract his actions and issue an apology to the Northern traders who had previously coexisted peacefully with their host communities.
