Apple has ushered in a new era of AI with “Apple Intelligence,” a suite of AI-powered features set to launch on various devices later this year. At WWDC 2024, Apple previewed tools for writing, image editing, and organization under this new branding.
Initially, Apple Intelligence will be available exclusively on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and Macs or iPads equipped with Apple’s M series chips, leaving older devices unsupported.
During the developer conference, Apple showcased features such as writing suggestions for Mail, personalized emoji creation, and an Image Playground for generating graphics from prompts. Photo editing tools will include a Magic Eraser-like feature to remove background objects and the ability to compile photos and videos into stories based on user prompts.
Apple assures users that most Apple Intelligence tasks will be processed on the device, with some operations potentially handled by secure Apple services. Importantly, Apple states it will not access or store any data related to these activities.
Aside from Apple Intelligence, several other significant announcements were made:
- iOS 18: Enhanced customization for home screen and control center, app locking with Face ID, and updates to Messages, Mail, Maps, and Photos.
- iPadOS 18: Includes iOS 18 features, a new calculator app, and a floating toolbar across built-in apps.
- macOS Sequoia: New Continuity features for seamless iPhone-Mac integration and Safari enhancements with page summaries.
- watchOS 11: Fitness-focused updates including Training Load, pauseable ring progress, a new Vitals app, and improved interface for smart stacks and Photos watch faces.
- visionOS 2: Supports 2D-to-spatial photo conversion and new gestures, with the Vision Pro headset expanding to more countries.
- tvOS 18: Introduces InSight for actor information, automatic subtitles when muting, and enhanced dialogue audio.
These updates reflect Apple’s commitment to integrating AI across its product line to enhance user experience and functionality.
