273 students graduate with first-class degrees at ABU's 42nd convocation ceremony

The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria will hold its 42nd Diamond Jubilee Convocation on Saturday, January 28th, 2023, where a total of 35,758 students from the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 sessions will be presented for conferment of degrees, postgraduate diplomas, and higher degrees.

According to a statement released by the institution’s Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila, the graduands include 8,842 higher degrees, 869 Ph.D’s, 60 M.Phil’s, 6,179 Masters, and 1,734 Postgraduate Diplomas. Additionally, there will be 26,916 Bachelor’s Degrees conferred, with 273 being First Class, 5,647 being Second Class Upper Division, 17,567 being Second Class Lower Division, 2,899 being Third Class Honours, 45 Pass Degrees, and 485 unclassified degrees.

The convocation will also honor four individuals for their immeasurable contributions to humanity, including former military governor of old Kano State, Col. Sani Bello (Rtd), Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ms. Amina Jane Mohammed, former Bursar of Ahmadu Bello University, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Jibo, and Katsina-based philanthropist, Hajiya Fatima Lami Usman Kurfi. These individuals will be conferred with the institution’s honorary doctorate degrees.

The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, will be the Special Guest of Honor, while Malam Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai, the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, will be the Chief Host, and Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, the Emir of Zazzau, will be the Royal Father of the Day.

In addition to the convocation, there will be a pre-convocation lecture on Friday, January 27th, 2023 at 4pm, entitled “The Impact of Man-Made and Natural Disasters on Food Security and Agricultural Development in Nigeria”, which will be delivered by Mr. Boss G. Mustapha, CFR, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chair by Mr. Hubert Wigwe, CON, Managing Director, Access Bank PLC. A public lecture will also be held on Tuesday, January 24th, 2023, presented by an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Adebayo Olukoshi, on the topic of “Nigeria: Character Builds a Nation, Dignity Transforms It.”
