In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed his approval of former Rivers state Governor Nyesom Wike’s ministerial nomination. Ogunlewe stated that the nomination serves as “compensation” for Wike’s pivotal role in securing President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.
Despite serving two terms as Governor under the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike had a falling out with the party’s leadership and decided to support Tinubu during the last election. As a gesture of recognition for his contributions, Wike was included in the list of ministerial nominees sent to the Senate last Thursday.
In the interview, Senator Ogunlewe asserted that Wike was not the sole figure working for the APC’s success in the presidential election. He cited other key figures like ex-governor Dave Umahi and Nasir El-Rufai, expressing his belief that they also deserve nominations based on their past achievements.
Ogunlewe emphasized that individuals like Umahi should be recognized for their remarkable infrastructural development in their respective states and encouraged them to replicate their successes at the national level.
Addressing the nominees, Ogunlewe issued a stern warning against veering away from the party’s manifesto. He stressed that President Bola Tinubu would not tolerate any deviation from the party’s principles, and thus, the nominees must be ready to diligently fulfill their roles.
With the screening process scheduled for Monday, Ogunlewe expressed optimism about its smooth proceedings. He acknowledged that Nigerians are eager to witness the country’s issues being addressed promptly and emphasized that there is no time for further delays.
“The National Assembly has very little to do. The situation of the country does not warrant plenty talk,” Ogunlewe remarked, emphasizing the urgency of tackling the nation’s challenges.
As Nigerians await the outcome of the screening process, all eyes are on Nyesom Wike and other nominees to see how they will contribute to the country’s progress and development.
