For almost a decade, Tiwa Savage has been hailed as the “First Lady of Mavin”, a fitting enough title given that she is the most successful artist to have ever been signed to Don Jazzy’s renowned record label.
After seven prosperous years, the Afropop superstar finally says goodbye to the label that launched her career, kicking off a brand new era with a game-changing global recording deal with Universal Music Group Worldwide.
Meeting with the chairman and chief executive of Universal Music Group (UMG), Sir Lucian Grainge, Tiwa Savage firmed up her deal with Universal, now officially signed as an artist under the world leading music behemoth, joining the likes of Rihanna, Drake, Kanye West and more.
As a UMG artist, Tiwa Savage will have her music promoted to a much wider audience, thanks to the solid musical infrastructure Universal have in their countries of operations, of which there are over 60 worldwide.
With Mavin, she conquered Africa, and with Universal, Tiwa Savage hopes to conquer the world. About doing that on her own terms, Tiwa continued:
“I think for me it’s really, really important for my story to be told, but my way. And for the music to be presented to the rest of the world the right way.
I love that I’m still allowed to do me, musically, visually as well… I want to carry along my fans that I already have while I’m gaining new fans.”
