A major leadership crisis has erupted within the Labour Party, causing significant turmoil within the party’s ranks. However, amidst the chaos, the party’s governorship candidate in Ogun State, Kehinde Sogunle, House of Assembly candidates from the recently concluded election, local government Party Chairmen, and other key stakeholders across the state have united in their support for the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee.
In a consolidation meeting held on Thursday at the NLC Secretariat in Abeokuta, the party stakeholders reaffirmed their unwavering trust in Abure, Peter Obi, and the party’s gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State.
This declaration of support comes in response to the recent claim made by the Michael Ashade faction of the Labour Party in Ogun State, asserting their authority over the party despite their suspension by the Abure-led National Working Committee.
During the meeting, Kehinde Sogunle urged LP members to approach the situation with equanimity and magnanimity. He emphasized the significance of effectively managing the crisis at hand, highlighting the potential opportunities that lie ahead. Sogunle stated, “Today, we stand at a crossroads between crisis and numerous opportunities. If we handle the crisis skillfully, we can exploit these opportunities successfully. We should take solace in the fact that we have made sacrifices and significant contributions to the political landscape, the people, and the party. What lies before us is nothing compared to the strength within us and the future that awaits us.”
Sogunle further emphasized that the Labour Party has consistently demonstrated that where there is a will, there is a way.
The gubernatorial candidate stressed, “We have endured frustrations, cheating, betrayals, deceits, and deceptions, yet we continue to stand resolute and uphold our credibility. Despite the losses we have faced and the mistakes we have made, we remain determined and undeterred because nothing can impede an idea whose time has come.”
Taking a veiled dig at the Lamidi Apapa faction and its supporters in Ogun State, Sogunle remarked, “The major detractors have openly exposed themselves, revealing their uncouth nature to the world.”
He stated, “We did not engage in a battle with their reprehensible behavior but demonstrated our superior intellect, proving that victory can be achieved without fighting. Their final disgrace and expulsion from the party are imminent! They have been chastised by leaders at home, and now they have exposed themselves to national scrutiny while dancing in their nakedness.”
Acting Labour Party Chairman in Ogun, Lookman Jagun, urged members to remain calm, stating, “This is not the time for immediate compensation or rewards, but a time to reorganize and unify our voice. We must exercise patience and adopt a long-term perspective.”
Various stakeholders at the meeting reiterated their support for the gubernatorial candidate and the State Party Caretaker Committee, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence among members.
The LP leaders vowed not to be derailed or distracted by the internal “dramas” unfolding within the party, underscoring their commitment to achieving a New Nigeria through Peter Obi, the LP presidential candidate.
They further stated, “Reclaiming the stolen mandate of the Labour Party is our top priority. The rumors of fund misappropriation are nothing more than a scripted narrative concocted by paid betrayers seeking to sow discord within the state.”
They concluded with a resolute declaration, saying, “Comrade Kehinde Sogunle is a reputable leader, and we believe in his leadership style, pedigree, and track record. Abure remains our national Chairman, Jagun Lookman is our State
