So TalkGlitz Media and Maestros Clan decided to have a roundtable discussion to wrap up the Nigerian Music Industry for the year 2017. Gida Hills on Thursday played host to Wole Oduwole, Olaolu9ja, Blak Shakespear and Emiko at GCL Hub in Lagos where the hip-hop heads got to deliberate about the activities of the year so far.
After pulling different inferences, we jointly agreed on this list of the top 5 Nigerian hip-hop artists that performed most in the year 2017 under review.
5. LADIPOE
This chap has been around the hip-hop block for a while but the radar shifted on him the moment he got signed on to Mavin. Gida Hills and Blak Shakespear are rooting for the rapper as one of the realest acts in the game right. His tracks; Man Already, Mr Poe Mr Ice with Ice Prince and couple others with label mates, Iyanya and Tiwa Savage. Mr Poe is one rapper in his world, one of the few that are not trying to fit in. On features, he turned out to be so impressive.
4. BURNA BOY
One artist that seems to have tried all genres. Well, Burna Boy could be referred to as a reggae/dancehall act but his style mixes hip-hop in the most exceptional way any Nigerian musician can. He’s on the list because of his ability to do hip-hop in his dexterous style. His releases Gba, Streets of Lagos and his feature on Skales Gbefun go to prove alot about the guy’s talent. In spite of the numerous controversy is caught up in, he still comes out more often with releases.
3. DREMO
The Davido Music Worldwide rapper who was enlisted in the last season as one the artists to look out for in 2017. We can actually say the DMW act lived a little up to expectation with his hip-hop style. Though much is expected from Dremo but the rapper gave an impressive shot with his few releases this year. His song, WHO has got a critical review as one the best hip-hop songs released in 2017
2. YCEE:
The Tinny Entertainment rapper is now celebrated as the king of the new rap culture in Nigeria. His swags, ability to blend on any sound and still stick out as a hip-hop artist is something worth applauding. Ycee like Dremo is another new school leader with so much to bring to the industry. Just when we though hip-hop is losing its face in the region, these dudes appear like the saving grace.
1. FALZ:
Falz The Bahd Guy is unarguably the most successful hip-hop artist this year in all ramifications. The rapper had a good outing this year with quite a number of singles before dropping a surprise 27 Album on his 27th birthday. Every of his songs has a wide reach. Falz as an artist has a magicial touch he brings to his music that makes it widely accepted. Aside from his comic style, he’s an a rare kind in the industry. His ability to experiment his style in different ways also gave him an avenue to break more grounds.
