President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has promised Nigerian workers a “living wage” that will enable them to live decently and provide for their families. This commitment was made in a statement issued on Monday, May 1st, in Abuja, to mark the Workers’ Day celebration.
Tinubu, who is set to take over the presidency on May 29, 2023, expressed his admiration for the Nigerian labor movement and its contributions to the country’s history. He recounted the labour movement’s role in the struggle for independence and the restoration of democracy in 1999.
The President-elect noted that Nigerian workers have always fought on the side of the masses and said he would be a dependable ally and co-labourer in the fight for social and economic justice for all Nigerians, including working people. Tinubu also emphasized the need for cooperation to tackle the challenges facing the country, such as poverty, ignorance, disease, disunity, ethnic and religious hate.
Tinubu pledged to implement better welfare and working conditions as outlined in his Renewed Hope Agenda for A Better Nigeria. He also assured Nigerian workers that he was prepared to take tough and hard decisions to ensure that they could live more abundantly.
