Nigeria, Gabon, South Africa, and Uganda Advance to Morocco as Group Results Go Their Way
Nigeria’s Super Eagles were among four teams that secured their places at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Thursday without stepping onto the pitch. They joined Gabon, South Africa, and Uganda in qualifying for the tournament, thanks to favorable results in their respective groups.
Nigeria’s qualification was confirmed after Libya’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda, guaranteeing the Super Eagles a top-two finish in Group D. The team later faced Benin Republic and played to a 1-1 draw, officially sealing their position as group winners. Victor Osimhen’s late equalizer ensured the Super Eagles ended the night with a point after falling behind to a 16th-minute strike by Benin’s Mohammed Tijani.
Meanwhile, Tunisia secured their spot in the finals with a dramatic 93rd-minute winner, defeating Madagascar 3-2 away and marking their record-extending 17th qualification for the continental showpiece.
In addition to Nigeria, a host of other teams have already confirmed their spots in Morocco for AFCON 2025. These include Algeria, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Angola, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Morocco, and reigning AFCON champions Senegal. More teams are expected to join the list in the coming days as the qualification rounds conclude.
