Nigeria’s Home-Based Squad Prepares for Group Stage Challenge
The home-based Super Eagles of Nigeria are gearing up for a challenging first-round group at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after failing to secure a seeded position in the tournament draw.
The draw for the biennial competition will take place on Tuesday at the CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt. Teams will be seeded based on their performances in the last three editions of CHAN (2022, 2020, and 2018), but Nigeria missed out on the last two tournaments.
The Super Eagles earned their place in CHAN 2024 by defeating rivals Ghana 3-1 in the qualifiers. However, their absence from the previous editions means they are unseeded, increasing the likelihood of being grouped with stronger teams.
Co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, along with defending champions Senegal, will occupy Pot 1 in the draw. This could see Nigeria facing any of these teams early in the tournament.
About CHAN
The African Nations Championship features national teams comprising players who compete in their respective domestic leagues. It offers a platform to showcase local talent and runs parallel to the more prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
CHAN 2024 will take place from February 1 to February 28, with Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda hosting matches across their venues.
Despite the challenges, the Super Eagles will aim to make a strong impression after missing two consecutive tournaments. Their return to the competition has sparked hope among fans eager to see the team reclaim its place among Africa’s elite.
The road to CHAN glory will undoubtedly test the resilience and skill of Nigeria’s home-based squad as they prepare for what promises to be a competitive tournament.
