Sudan’s ambassador to Nigeria, Muhammad Yusuf, has urged Nigerian evacuees to return to Sudan once the current crisis in the country has been resolved.
The Sudanese envoy made this request on Thursday morning after some of the evacuated Nigerians arrived at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja.
The evacuees had spent nearly a week stranded in Egypt due to visa and border clearance issues, after spending two weeks in Sudan waiting for evacuation by the Nigerian government.
Yusuf expressed optimism that the situation in Khartoum was calming down and that the army would soon regain control of the whole territory.
He urged the Nigerians to consider Sudan as their second country, emphasizing that no lives were lost during their stay in Sudan.
“I hope that things will be controlled there (Sudan) and safety would be back and rehabilitation will be started there and you can come back to your second country to pursue and continue your studies for those who are students and for others who have business there,” he said.
The ambassador also disclosed that the Sudanese government had proposed a seven-day humanitarian truce to allow trapped people to access basic necessities such as food, water, shelter, and medicine.
However, he clarified that there would be no direct negotiations between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Yusuf’s appeal comes amidst an ongoing crisis in Sudan, where violence erupted after a military coup ousted the transitional government. The RSF, which is a paramilitary group, has been accused of carrying out attacks on civilians, leading to an international outcry.
