The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has pledged to provide the necessary support to ensure that Nigerian students who were evacuated from war-torn Sudan can be integrated into the country’s universities.
The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, made this announcement on Tuesday in Abuja while discussing the modalities for integrating the affected students into tertiary institutions with the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
Prof. Oloyede empathized with the students and commended NIDCOM for the effective handling of their evacuation, adding that JAMB would ensure they receive the necessary support. He promised to provide the necessary infrastructure and enablement for these students to be returned to the educational system.
The JAMB Registrar, however, cautioned the students not to follow the path of those who returned to Nigeria over a year ago as a result of Ukraine’s war but failed to comply with the stipulated procedures that would have ensured they continued their academic programs seamlessly in Nigerian universities.
He emphasized that there are procedures for the transfer of students which include transcripts, rules and regulations, and compliance with the minimum residency requirement of two years in the university.
He added that the guidelines for the transfer of students have already been handed over to the chairperson of the NIDCOM
Regarding spending a minimum of two academic sessions in Nigerian universities, Oloyede stated that if a student is in a five-year program and has completed year 3, they will begin their studies from year 4, spending two academic sessions in total.
For students studying Medicine, if they are in their 600 level, the Medical and Dental Council will assess their practical work and move them to year 5, 500 level. They will then complete year 5 and year 6 and obtain their certificate from the Nigerian institution.
The evacuation of Nigerian students from Sudan is part of the government’s effort to protect Nigerian citizens living in foreign countries affected by conflict and other crises.
JAMB’s commitment to supporting the student’s integration into the country’s universities will ensure that they can continue their academic pursuits and contribute to the country’s development.
