The final day of the Premier League season for 2021/2022 saw a lot of heartwarming and gut-wrenching results for different sides. The battle for the top four was a very intense one and one that went down the wire and saw a lot of drama even before the final day. Spurs had beaten Arsenal three-nil to get within a point of the Gunners and the Gunners did not help matters when they lost to Newcastle by two goals to nothing at St James’s Park, while Spurs narrowly defeated Burnley 1-0.
With Spurs two points ahead of Arsenal, the Gunners had to hope that Tottenham would lose to Norwich on Sunday and they would win against Everton. However, it was not to be as Spurs defeated Norwich five-nil away from home at Carrow Road and though Arsenal smashed Everton 5-1, it was not enough as Spurs still had a two-point edge over their city rivals.
Goals from Dejan Kulusevski, Harry Kane, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and a brace from Heung-Min Son, meant that Tottenham will play in the UEFA Champions League next season. Arsenal’s thrashing of the Toffees meant they will be in the Europa League next season, as they needed Tottenham to lose in the East Anglia.
Manchester United lost away from home at Selhurst Park, with Patrick Vieria’s men taking the day in South London. Wilfried Zaha scored the only goal of the game as the Eagles enjoyed their last victory of the season. West Ham lost 3-1 to Brighton, albeit having led at halftime. A win for the Hammers could have seen Manchester United finish seventh and thus play in the UEFA Conference League, the third tier of continental football in Europe. United secured a Europa League place while West Ham qualify for the Conference League next season.
Manchester United will most definitely want to forget this season as it initially held a lot of promises and it has now become what will be best described as a shambolic season for them. With a new manager already at the club to take over ahead of next season, fans are going to use the summer to get over the 2022/2022 woes. Spurs clinching the top four has brought a lot of joy to their fans and it has commanded respect for manager Antonio Conte, who did a good job of bringing up a ninth-placed Tottenham to fourth.
