United were left frustrated by some frustrating officiating but had no one to blame but themselves. With a lack of goals and quality play, they were easily defeated by few talking points.

When Jadon Sancho was fouled in the box, Erik ten Hag’s side couldn’t capitalize on it. And they also had their lead taken away when Cristiano Ronaldo had two goals called back.

In the first 45 minutes of the game, Newcastle created more chances and looked better than United. Joelinton hit the bar and post, but United were able to capitalize on their opportunities in the second half when Marcus Rashford came on.

The forward rounded the keeper but mistakenly teed up Fred, instead of shooting himself, and the Brazilian predictably missed the open target. Rashford had another chance to win the game at the death but could only head wide.

Sir Alex Ferguson was back for kick-off, but returned to his seat on the sidelines after the game. There were no matter how many minutes were added to Manchester United’s time.

The Newcastle fans all seemed resigned to their team’s defeat before it even happened. In the 77th minute, one fan trudged down the walkway and hissed bitterly at some of the Newcastle analysts. The Newcastle strategy of constant attacking pressure was getting to United supporters as well as players.

The referee Craig Pawson was half-heartedly booed by the crowd even louder than some of Manchester United’s underperformers. The final shrill brought the loudest boos, reserved for Pawson despite his involvement in another blunt United performance.
