Netherlands national team head coach Louis van Gaal has urged compatriot Erik ten Hag to say no to the vacancy of the manager at Manchester United. The club are hoping to recruit a new manager following the sack of Ole Gunnar Solkjær in November when United lost to Watford 4-1 at Vicarage Road. Ralf Rangnick was then appointed on an interim basis until the end of the season.

van Gaal, who coached Manchester United from 2014-2016 believes he had been unfairly treated by the hierarchy at Old Trafford. The Dutchman led the club to FA cup glory in his final season (2015/16) when Jesse Lingard’s extra time winner handed Manchester United the trophy over Crystal Palace.

Erik ten Hag has already been interviewed by the Manchester United board and the club will still consider other managers as well. There is currently no favourite to get the job as things stand. HoweeHo,van Gaal has described United as a “commercial club” and not as a football club that needs the rudiments that most football clubs require; to compete at the top level, win tournaments and the like. van Gaal believes joining Manchester United will cause a future problem for ten Hag.

Other candidates being considered are Paris Saint Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino,Paulo Fonseca and Brendan Rodgers.
