Sowore Omoyele, the founder of the highly reputable online investigative news platform, Sahara Reporters, has declared his intention to run for Nigeria’s presidency in 2019. The political activist has also promised to stick up the minimum wage of workers from N19,000 to N100,000 if elected.
The UNILAG alumnus and former Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the institution has been clamouring for a revamp in the political system for a while now. He launched out early this year with the “Take Back Nigeria” movement with the target of raising $2 million but unfortunately, the fundraising was suspended by GoFundMe. According to Sowore, the campaign must have gathered negative reports from his antagonists after they realised how far it was going. He confirmed that the #TakeBackNigeria campaign was able to raise $1,000 in 1 hour.
Mr. Sowore, who lives in New York from where he runs Sahara Reporters, first unveiled his presidential ambition during one of his regular visits to Nigeria last month.
And earlier today, he shared this with Nigerians as regards his 2019 political ambition:
“Good morning Nigeria!
Our starting minimum wage for Nigerian workers will be N100,000, we can’t run a modern, efficient and corrupt-free civil service without proper remuneration.
Rest assured that we can afford it, we simply need to cut public waste and corruption by 20%, diversify our economy, collect taxes, excise and customs duties, stop giving out waivers to cronies…and many more strategies to be unveiled.”
Sowore had revealed yesterday that he already has people studying various sectors of the Nigerian economy to ensure he hits the ground running from the first day if he gets the mandate of Nigerians to be the next occupant of Aso Rock presidential villa.
But he has not indicated which of the over 60 political parties in Nigeria he will contest on.
