Ryan Routh’s Son Speaks Out, Describes Father as Anti-Trump But Non-Violent
The son of Ryan Wesley Routh, the man accused of attempting to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump, has expressed shock at his father’s involvement in the alleged incident. Oran Routh told the Daily Mail that while his father harbors a strong dislike for Trump, he was surprised to learn that his dad was allegedly involved in a violent plot.
“My father hates Trump like every reasonable person does,” Oran said, adding that he, too, isn’t a fan of the former president. However, Oran maintained that his father had never been a violent person, and as far as he knew, his father’s only prior run-ins with the law involved minor traffic violations.
However, records paint a different picture. In 2002, Ryan Routh was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon of mass destruction, after a standoff with police in Greensboro, NC. The weapon in question was reportedly a fully automatic machine gun.
More recently, Routh, who has reportedly been living in Hawaii, has had other interactions with law enforcement, including being removed from a property in 2019 for alleged squatting.
Ryan Routh’s political views are varied. He has expressed strong support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, even traveling to Kyiv in 2022 to help connect foreigners with military units and aid groups. “To me, a lot of the other conflicts are gray, but this conflict is definitely black and white. This is about good versus evil,” he told Newsweek at the time.
Routh’s social media posts, however, reveal a more intense disdain for Trump. In a now-suspended X (formerly Twitter) account, Routh posted in June 2020, “I will be glad when you gone,” after previously backing Trump in the 2016 election.
While Routh has shown ties to the Democratic Party, including voting in North Carolina’s Democratic primary in 2024 and contributing to the fundraising platform ActBlue, he has also supported Republican candidates such as Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy.
The investigation into the alleged assassination attempt is ongoing, and further details about Routh’s involvement are expected to emerge.
