R. Kelly, a well-known American singer whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, has been relocated to a federal prison in Butner, North Carolina. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed the move last Wednesday, stating that he was previously held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago.
The singer was sentenced in February of 2023 to an additional year in prison for federal child pornography and child enticement charges, adding to the 30-year sentence he is already serving for a separate conviction in New York.
In September 2022, Kelly was found guilty by a federal jury in Chicago on six counts of sexually abusing three women identified by the pseudonyms Jane, Pauline, and Nia. The women testified that Kelly had sexually abused them on video.
However, the singer was acquitted of enticement charges involving two other accusers, Tracy and Brittany, as well as seven other charges, including obstruction of justice. Kelly and two of his associates were accused of rigging his 2008 child pornography trial in Cook County.
Kelly still faces a solicitation of prostitution charge in Minnesota, although that case has been put on hold as his federal cases have taken precedence.
In a recent decision, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx dropped sexual abuse and sexual assault indictments against Kelly, citing his existing prison sentence and the need to focus on other sexual assault cases.
Kelly, who is currently 56 years old, may be eligible for release from prison when he is over 79 years old.
